Therapy for Individuals Navigating Relationship Issues in St. Paul-Minneapolis

Online Therapy Available for all of Minnesota

When relationships are functional, they offer connection, stability, support, and joy in our lives, but dysfunctional relationships can leave us feeling lonely and insecure. If you struggle within relationships, therapy may be a good opportunity to take a closer look at your own role in relationships, your wants and needs in partnerships. Through individual therapy sessions with a relational lens, you can explore how your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors contribute to issues within your relationships. I’m Kathy Johnson, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), working with individuals in my St. Paul-Minneapolis area therapy practice, Tarriance. While I don’t see couples or offer marital counseling, there are many times when it’s essential to bring a relational lens to my work with individuals. Because relationships play such an integral part in creating fulfilling lives, it’s important to develop the level of effective communication, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness necessary to create meaningful connections of all kinds (romantic, familial, professional, and friendly). You can learn more about how individual therapy can help you improve your relationships on this page or by getting in touch to schedule a consultation.

Why Would I Consider Individual Therapy for Relationship Issues

Just about anyone could benefit from therapy to help them better understand how to develop and sustain more satisfying relationships. To guide your consideration of therapy as an option to meet your needs, consider your answers to the following questions:

  • Do you have trouble connecting with other people or sustaining long-term relationships?

  • Do you find yourself bringing the same relational patterns from your past into current relationships?

  • Do you frequently end relationships before a partner has a chance to reject you?

  • Have you decided to give up on relationships altogether?

  • Would you like to understand your own communication and relational patterns in order to bring new insights and skills to your relationship?

  • Are you struggling in your current relationship, but are not ready yourself to suggest couples counseling?

  • Do you know that you and your partner would benefit from couples counseling but your partner is unwilling to join you at this point?

  • Are you already in couples counseling and your counselor recommends individual therapy as well?

  • Have you made the difficult decision to end a relationship and feel unsure how to move forward?

How Does Therapy Help with Relationship Issues?

Relationships, by their nature, are interpersonal, so in many cases, it makes sense to see a couples therapist with your partner. It is often very useful to see an individual therapist in conjunction with a couples therapist to gain individual support as you work through relational issues. It is often useful to request that your individual counselor and couples counselor consult with one another to better help your overall progress. If you’re struggling within an existing relationship, individual therapy can help you understand how your behaviors impact the relationship, and counseling gives you an opportunity to work through any underlying concerns that may be negatively impacting your ability to connect fully with your loved ones.
